Why do we scratch our heads when we think?

Do you often find yourself itching while you think? The head-scratching scene is very familiar to everyone – from childhood and researchers associate it with thinking and studying the future action. Very often, we ourselves do the same when we think about the things we need to do or say.

Mainly we are talking about situations in which it is necessary to think carefully before deciding on any action, while scratching the head is exactly the automatic reaction of our body, Telegrafi reports. The brain interprets such situations as stressful, while any form of unconscious touch is an attempt to calm and comfort ourselves, psychologists explain. Automatic gestures, such as scratching the head or massaging the neck, are external expressions of the internal state of a person.

Psychologists consider that most of these unconscious gestures, which include touching oneself, represent the human desire to be comforted in moments of uncertainty or stress – and in that way we precisely brace ourselves in order to reach the best solution. Scratching the head is a series of unconscious movements with which a person tries to help himself to relax and reduce the volume of stress, while he is oriented in the direction of the head, because it is the source of that stress.
